Austin Kim (ê¹íê·), born Kim Tae-gyu on July 1, 1992, in Seoul, South Korea, is a Korean classical vocalist known for his rare contralto voice, one of the few of its kind in the world. He began his musical journey participating in competitions, placing second at the Suri Music Competition in 2008 and third at both the Shin Young-ok and Sungjeong Music Competitions in 2009. After graduating from Sunhwa Arts High School, he became the first countertenor to enter the Universität der Künste Berlin, Europeâs largest comprehensive arts university. Kimâs breakthrough came when he won first place at the Perotti International Competition â Solo, The Arts in Szczecin Orchestra in 2017. In 2023, he gained wide recognition as a member and leader of Fortena, a male quartet crossover group that competed in JTBCâs Phantom Singer 4, finishing as the runner-up. He released his debut single, âAllow Me,âon September 18, 2025, showcasing his unique vocal timbre and artistry.
