Biography

Story of the Year was formed in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1995 under the original name 67 North by guitarist Ryan Phillips, drummer Dan Marsala, vocalist John Taylor and bassist Perry West; the group later became Big Blue Monkey before adopting the current name in 2002. Their breakthrough came with the 2003 release of the self‑titled EP Story of the Year, which led to a contract with Maverick Records and the debut studio album Page Avenue (2003), featuring the singles "Until the Day I Die" and "Anthem of Our Dying Day" that propelled the album to Gold status and 846,000 U.S. sales by 2007. The band followed with In the Wake of Determination (2005), The Black Swan (2008) on Epitaph Records, The Constant (2010), and the crowd‑funded Wolves (2017). After lineup changes, bassist Adam Russell returned in 2018 and the group released Tear Me to Pieces (2023) through SharpTone Records, accompanied by a world tour. In 2025, they announced the forthcoming album A.R.S.O.N., scheduled for February 2026. Throughout their career, Story of the Year has maintained a presence on tours such as Taste of Chaos and has received RIAA certifications, including Platinum for Page Avenue (2021). The band remains active, continuing to contribute to the American rock landscape.
