Hawthorne Heights, formed in Dayton, Ohio in 2001, emerged from a lineup that included JT Woodruff (lead vocals, rhythm guitar) and Matt Ridenour (bass, backing vocals). The bandâs early momentum began with the release of the EP Paper Chromatography: The Fade from Dark to Light and the demo Four Bullets for One Girl, which attracted the attention of Confined Records. Their debut studio album The Silence in Black and White (2004) peaked at Number 56 on the Billboard 200 and achieved RIAA gold certification, while the followâup If Only You Were Lonely (2006) debuted at Number 3 on the Billboard 200 and earned gold status; the single "Saying Sorry" reached Number 7 on the Billboard Hot Modern Rock Tracks chart. After the tragic death of rhythm guitarist Casey Calvert in 2007, the group released Fragile Future (2008) through Victory Records, followed by Skeletons (2010), which entered the Billboard 200 at Number 50. The band shifted to independent releases with their own label Cardboard Empire, issuing the EP trilogy Hate (2011), Hope (2012), and Hurt (2014). Subsequent albums Bad Frequencies (2018), and The Rain Just Follows Me (2021) were released under Red River Entertainment and Pure Noise Records, respectively.
