Biography

From its humble origins within a community-based education project, the electronica group Asian Dub Foundation has grown into a loose collective of musicians with a worldwide following appearing at major festivals such as Glastonbury. The band, capable of playing in a variety of dance-friendly styles, was the brainchild of Aniruddha Das who ran an education workshop where he was assisted by John Pandit. The group’s first album was 1995’s Facts and Fictions displayed their knack for mixing hip-hop and various world beats. 2000’s Community Music earned Pandit an MBE in 2002, an honor he refused. Pandit's anti-establishment stance is reflected in the track “Fortress Europe” lifted off the 2003 album Enemy of the Enemy. The lyrical content is critical of European immigration policy with references to burning villages in Kosovo and machine guns on the cliffs of Dover. They pursued a variety of projects including 2005’s Tank and 2008’s Punkara, and creating a soundtrack for George Lucas’ first feature film, 1971’s THX 1138 over forty years after its initial release. In 2021 there was a determined push to make their song “Comin’ Over Here”, a politically pointed attack on racism, the number 1 song in England the first week of Brexit.
