Biography
Art Bears were an English avant-rock group formed in 1978 during the disassembly of Henry Cow. The band consisted of Chris Cutler, Fred Frith, and Dagmar Krause. Art Bears emerged from disagreements within Henry Cow over musical direction, leading to the release of their debut album Hopes and Fears that same year. Their music was characterized by its political content and experimental nature. In 1979, they released Winter Songs, a collection of short songs inspired by carvings on Amiens Cathedral. The band toured Europe in April and May 1979 as part of the Rock in Opposition movement. The band returned to the studio in 1980 to record what became their final album, The World as It Is Today, released in 1981, before splitting up. In 2004, The Art Box, which included all releases along with live and unreleased tracks, was released. The band's influence persisted through projects like the Art Bears Songbook, performed at festivals in Quebec and France.
