Biography
Arik Brauer was an Austrian singer-songwriter and painter who was born as Erich Brauer in Vienna, Austria, in 1929. He achieved early professional recognition as a co-founder of the Vienna School of Fantastic Realism and is famous for being a pioneer of Austropop and for his politically engaged songs in the Viennese dialect. Brauer studied singing at the Musikschule der Stadt Wien between 1947 and 1951. He settled in Paris in 1958 and formed a singing duo with his wife, Naomi Dahabani, known as Neomi et Arik Bar-Or. In 1971, he released his eponymous debut studio recording Arik Brauer, which received two gold certifications. His discography includes the hit tracks âSie ham a Haus bautâ (1971) and âSein Köpferl im Sandâ (1971) and the studio recordings Alles was Flügel hat fliegt (1973), Sieben auf einen Streich (1978), and Au (1985). He also released the singles âPetroleumliedâ (1973) and âSchattbergliedâ (1987), alongside the compilation Master Series (1998) and the studio recording Motschkern is gsund (2000). In 2000, he began performing with his daughters and Elias Meiri as the ensemble Die Brauers. Brauer was awarded the Amadeus Austrian Music Award for lifetime achievement in 2015. He died in 2021.
