Biography

Arawak Jah is a Cuban-American reggae group founded in 1994 by Ras Juan Perez, born in 1960 in La Habana. Perez left Havana during the Mariel boatlift in 1980 and initially settled in Wisconsin before moving to Orlando, Florida. The band released its self-titled debut album Arawak Jah in 1996 while based in Madison, Wisconsin. In 1997, the lineup included Perez alongside singer-guitarist Bobby Aleman, drummer Willie Wilson, and dance hall specialist Super Irie. They headlined the 1997 Bob Marley Festival Tour and released several albums, including King of Salem, which featured both Cuban and Jamaican reggae interpretations of six songs. Arawak Jah self-released ten CDs under Rasta Rumba Records, with their most recent album being Rasta King in 2008. The band has performed alongside well-known acts such as Burning Spear, Shaggy, Culture, Ipso Facto, and Tony Rebel.
