Biography

Aurelio Martínez, who performs mononymously as Aurelio, was a Honduran musician and politician who was born in 1969. He was a prominent member of the Garifuna community and served as the first black deputy in the National Congress of Honduras beginning in 2005. Martínez began his musical career at age 14 by forming the group Lita Ariran, which released the debut studio album Songs of the Garifuna: Lita Ariran (1995). He achieved international recognition with his solo debut studio album, Garifuna Soul, (2004) and was named Newcomer of the Year by Afropop. His discography includes the studio albums Laru Beya (2011), Landini (2014), and Darandi (2017). He collaborated with artists including Youssou N'Dour and was recognized as an international ambassador for Garifuna culture. Martínez died in 2025.
