Biography

Anita Jane Bryant, born on 25 March 1940 in Barnsdall, Oklahoma, was an American singer known for her contributions to pop and traditional pop music. She began singing at age two in the First Baptist Church of Barnsdall and performed at local events by six. Her early television appearances included The Anita Bryant Show on WKY, which she hosted at 12 years old. Her music career took off with her first hit single "Paper Roses" in 1959. She followed this success with notable songs such as "In My Little Corner of the World" (1960) and "Wonderland by Night" (1961). Her albums Paper Roses, In My Little Corner of the World, and Till There Was You each sold over a million copies. In 1977, she launched the controversial Save Our Children campaign in Miami to repeal a local ordinance protecting LGBTQ individuals from discrimination, which led to significant backlash and impacted her career negatively. Despite this controversy, she continued to release music until her death on 16 December 2024.
