Biography

竹中尚人, known as Char, was born 16 June 1955 in Togoshi, Shinagawa, Japan. He learned piano in elementary school and guitar at eight, becoming a session guitarist while still in junior high. Char’s breakthrough arrived in 1976 with the single "Navy Blue" and the self‑titled album Char on Canyon Records. In 1978 he joined Johnny Yoshinaga and Louise Louis Kabe to form Johnny, Louis & Char, later renamed Pink Cloud in 1982, producing four albums before the group disbanded in 1994.His solo work includes U.S.J. (1981), Psyche (1988), and Sacred Hills (2002). He founded Edoya in 1987 and Zicca Records in 2009, releasing six cover albums in 2010 that honored Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, The Beatles, The Ventures, Jimmy Page, and Jimi Hendrix. Collaborations feature Steve Lukather and Jeff Porcaro on U.S.J., a 2006 single "Stereocaster" with Tomoyasu Hotei, and a 2015 Rock+ tour with his son Jesse McFaddin.Char received notable accolades: he ranked 38th on HMV’s 2003 list of Japan’s 100 most important pop acts; Rolling Stone Japan placed Psyche 36th on its 2007 list of greatest Japanese rock albums; and Guitar Magazine named him Japan’s greatest guitarist in 2017. His instrumental "A Fair Wind" was ranked 34th best guitar instrumental by Young Guitar Magazine in 2019. Char remains active in performance and recording, contributing to Japan’s contemporary rock scene.
