竹ä¸å°äºº, known as Char, was born 16â¯Juneâ¯1955 in Togoshi, Shinagawa, Japan. He learned piano in elementary school and guitar at eight, becoming a session guitarist while still in junior high. Charâs breakthrough arrived in 1976 with the single "Navy Blue" and the selfâtitled album Char on Canyon Records. In 1978 he joined Johnnyâ¯Yoshinaga and Louiseâ¯Louisâ¯Kabe to form Johnny,â¯Louisâ¯&â¯Char, later renamed Pinkâ¯Cloud in 1982, producing four albums before the group disbanded in 1994.His solo work includes U.S.J. (1981), Psyche (1988), and Sacredâ¯Hills (2002). He founded Edoya in 1987 and Zicca Records in 2009, releasing six cover albums in 2010 that honored Ericâ¯Clapton, Jeffâ¯Beck, The Beatles, Theâ¯Ventures, Jimmyâ¯Page, and Jimiâ¯Hendrix. Collaborations feature Steveâ¯Lukather and Jeffâ¯Porcaro on U.S.J., a 2006 single "Stereocaster" with Tomoyasuâ¯Hotei, and a 2015 Rock+ tour with his son Jesse McFaddin.Char received notable accolades: he ranked 38th on HMVâs 2003 list of Japanâs 100 most important pop acts; Rollingâ¯Stoneâ¯Japan placed Psyche 36th on its 2007 list of greatest Japanese rock albums; and Guitarâ¯Magazine named him Japanâs greatest guitarist in 2017. His instrumental "A Fair Wind" was ranked 34th best guitar instrumental by Youngâ¯Guitarâ¯Magazine in 2019. Char remains active in performance and recording, contributing to Japanâs contemporary rock scene.
