Biography

Angela Martinez, known professionally as Angie Martinez, was born on January 9, 1971 in Brooklyn, New York City. She is an American radio host and rapper. Angie Martinez began her career in broadcasting at age 15, working at urban radio station WQHT (Hot 97). She quickly rose through the ranks, becoming a protégé of DJ Funkmaster Flex and hosting the Afternoon Drive segments. Angie Martinez's music career started with a feature on KRS-One’s track "Heartbeat" from his 1997 album I Got Next. This led to her appearance on Lil' Kim's "Not Tonight (Ladies Night)" remix, which peaked at number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was certified platinum. Angie Martinez released her debut studio album, Up Close And Personal, in April 2001, featuring production by Salaam Remi, Knobody, Rockwilder, and The Neptunes, with guest appearances from Jay-Z, Snoop Dogg, Mary J. Blige, and others. Her second album, Animal House, was released in August 2002, including the hit single "If I Could Go", which peaked at number 15 on the Billboard Hot 100. Angie Martinez retired from rapping in 2003 to focus on her radio career and entrepreneurial ventures. She left Hot 97 in June 2014 and joined Power 105.1 (WWPR-FM). She won the National Association of Broadcasters Marconi Radio Award for Major Market Personality of the Year in 2018 and was inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame in 2020.
