Andrea Lee DeCapite, known professionally as Andrea Carroll, was born on October 3, 1946, in Cleveland, Ohio. She began her career as a singer at the age of three, appearing on The Gene Carroll Show, a local talent show hosted by Gene Carroll. Her first recordings were released under the Epic label in 1961, including "Young and Lonely" and "Please Don't Talk to the Lifeguard", which became a regional hit but did not break into national charts. Carroll signed with Bright Tunes Productions in New York City and recorded "It Hurts To Be Sixteen", released on the Big Top label. The song, written as an answer to Neil Sedaka's "Happy Birthday Sweet Sixteen", reached number 45 on the US pop chart in 1963. Despite this success, her follow-up single, "The Doolang", did not chart. She continued releasing singles on RCA and United Artists labels, including "Hey Beach Boy", but these were unsuccessful. Carroll appeared regularly on The Gene Carroll Show through the mid-1960s and toured with her own band before transitioning away from music.
