Biography
Anacaona, an all-female jazz and Latin jazz band from Cuba, was founded in 1932 by Concepción "Cuchito" Castro Zaldarriaga and her sisters. The group debuted at Havana's Teatro Payret and became a radio sensation. Named after the TaÃno cacique Anacaona, they toured extensively through Latin America and signed with RCA Victor in 1937. In 1938, they opened the Havana Madrid nightclub in New York and performed at notable venues. The band returned to Cuba before World War II and achieved international fame. They continued performing internationally until 1958 when they returned to Cuba amid the Cuban Revolution. Anacaona integrated into Cubaâs Consejo Nacional de la Cultura in 1962 and performed publicly until 1989. After a hiatus, Anacaona reformed in 1989 under new leadership and has released several albums, including Lo Que Tu Esparabas (2000) and 85 Años defendiendo la música Cubana (2017), and toured extensively.
