Biography

Anamaría Tijoux Merino, aka Ana Tijoux, is a French rapper, singer, songwriter and musician whose roots and career are firmly embedded in the music and culture of Chile, the home country of her parents who fled the Pinochet regime in 1973. She later travelled to Chile in 1993 and formed the duo Los Gamelos. Two years later, she joined forces with local rappers Seo2, Cenzi, and DJ Squat to form the band Makiza in Santiago. This combination resulted in the bestselling album 'Aerolineas Makiza' and the chart-topping single, 'La Rosa de los Vientos'. The band split in 2000 leading Tijoux into solo work and collaborations with other artists both in Chile and in France. 2004 saw Makiza reform briefly before finally disintegrating in 2006. Tijoux continued her solo work, collaborating with Julieta Venegas and Jorge Drexler among others. She continues to tour and in 2019 released a single, '#CACEROLAZO!' that protested against the government of Chile under Sebastian Piñera. It went viral, with 1.6 million plays on its first day of release.
