Ana MatawhÄura Hato, born on 30 December 1907 in NgÄpuna, Rotorua, New Zealand, was a MÄori singer. She grew up performing traditional MÄori music and joined Guide Rangiâs concert group by age 16. In 1927, Hato and her cousin Deane Waretini recorded 14 songs with Parlophone Records, including "Hine E Hine" and "Waiata Poi", which were commercially successful in New Zealand and Australia. Throughout her career, Hato toured extensively and led her own concert party from 1933. She continued to perform despite suffering from cancer until 1950. Hato died on 8 December 1953. In 1996, some of her recordings with Waretini were released on CD.
