Amadu Bansang Jobarteh, born around 1915 in Tambasan Sang, Gambia, was a respected kora player and member of the Jali (Griot) tradition. His father, Fili Jobarteh, was a ngoni player who settled in Bansang after leaving Gaalen, Mali. He learned to play the kora, a 21-stringed bridge-harp prevalent among the Mandinka people. By the 1940s, he began his musical career in Kombo, supported by local chiefs and wealthy merchants. His career spanned nearly six decades, with notable releases including Master of the Kora (1978) and Tabara: Gambian Kora Music (1993). He was a guest musician at the University of Washingtonâs music ethnology department in 1986-1987. He passed away on 8 April 2001, in Bansang, Gambia. His influence extends to his nephew Sidiki Diabaté and great-nephew Toumani Diabaté, both prominent musicians.
