Biography
Alexei Fayzulkhakovich Sultanov, born August 7, 1969, in Tashkent, Uzbek Soviet Socialist Republic, was an Uzbekistani and American classical pianist. He began piano lessons at age six with Tamara Popovich before studying under Lev Naumov at the Moscow Conservatory. His breakthrough came when he won the Eighth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition on June 11, 1989, which led to appearances on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson and Late Night with David Letterman. He went on to perform at Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center. In October 1995, he won second prize at the XIII International Chopin Piano Competition and boycotted the winners' concert after the first prize was not awarded. His performances of concertos by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and Sergei Rachmaninoff were recorded under the Teldec Classics label, and his albums FantaisieâImpromptu (1997) and Sultanov plays Chopin (1999) were issued by the Arts Core Corporation. He became an American citizen in 2004. Following several strokes that left him partially paralyzed, he continued to perform using his right hand, accompanied by his wife Dace Abele on the left hand. He died on June 30, 2005, in Fort Worth, Texas.
