Biography

Alexander Claffy – born June 9, 1992 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania – is a jazz bassist, composer, bandleader, and educator. Raised in a musical household – his father was a pianist and bandleader, his mother was a vocalist – Claffy first learned to play the piano before switching to the bass. He had many musical mentors in Philadelphia including Ron Carter, Dwayne Burno and Orin O'Brien. Claffy relocated to New York City in 2011 and worked with many of the city’s jazz greats including Chris Botti, Wallace Roney, Joey Alexander, Jimmy Cobb, Louis Hayes, Harold Mabern, and others. He formed the band Claffy and released their self-titled debut album in 2016. He released the solo album Standards: What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life? in 2018. The following year, his band released the album Claffy II.
