Biography

Akira Kobayashi is a Japanese singer and actor. He was born on November 3, 1938, in Setagaya Ward, Tokyo. He joined the Tōdō Theater Company at the age of 4 and made his stage debut at age 6. In 1956, he passed the auditions for the third Nikkatsu New Faces program and made his official film debut in October of that year in the movie *Hungry Souls*. In 1958, he made his debut as a singer with “Forget About Women” on Nippon Columbia, and his second single, “150 Tons of Dynamite,” became a hit. From then on, he produced numerous hits, including theme songs for his own starring films such as *Ginza Whirlwind Kid* and *The Migrant with a Guitar*, as well as songs like “Danchone-bushi” and “Zundoko-bushi,” which came to be known as the “Akira-style.” In 1964, he moved to Crown Records and released “Automobile Show Song.” Starting in 1972, he appeared in the *Battle Without Honor and Humanity* film series, and in 1977, he made his first appearance on the *Kohaku Uta Gassen* with “Appearing Under My Old Name.” In 1985, “To a Passionate Heart” became a massive hit. He continued to be active in various fields thereafter and received the Chairman’s Award for Distinguished Service at the 47th Japan Academy Film Awards in 2024.
