Biography

Akim El Sikameya is an Algerian arabo-andalou singer and violinist from Oran. El Sikameya began singing and playing violin at age eight at the Nassim El Andalous school. At 12, he performed with a college orchestra throughout Algeria. In Oran, he founded the group El Meya, which integrated flamenco guitar and piano into traditional noubas. El Sikameya moved to Marseille in 1994, where his counter-tenor voice and violin technique—playing standing with the instrument supported on his thigh—received attention. He released his debut album, Atifa-Oumi, in 1999. His discography included Aïni-Amel (2005), which blended arabo-andalou music with jazz, Celtic, and bossa nova. In 2008, he released the album Un chouïa d'amour. El Sikameya performed as an opening act for Alain Souchon, Julien Clerc, Noa, Cesária Évora, and Khaled.
