Biography
Agnes Giebel, born on August 10, 1921 in Heerlen, Netherlands, was a German soprano particularly noted for her interpretations of Johann Sebastian Bach's works. She moved to Essen with her family in 1925 and began studying singing under Hilde Wesselmann at the Folkwang School in Essen-Werden after her voice was discovered in 1933. Giebel started her professional career as a concert singer in 1947 and gained recognition through her work with RIAS Berlin in 1950, including recordings of Bach's cantatas. She collaborated with notable conductors such as Karl Richter and Sergiu Celibidache, and performed with artists like Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and Hermann Prey. Her discography includes albums such as Schubert: Lieder (1996) and Orff: Carmina Burana (2009). She received the Federal Cross of Merit in 2002, and passed away on April 24, 2017, in Cologne.
