Biography

Born into a family of traditional Norwegian musicians, folk singer Agnes Buen Garnås is the daughter of Anders Buen and the sister of Knut Buen and Hauk Buen. Born in Kongsberg on October 23, 1946, she learned the traditional ballad repertoire as a child and, after studying at Telemark University, began her singing career with the trio album Når klokkune gjeve dur (1976), in collaboration with Sondre Bratland and her sister-in-law Hanne Kjersti Buen. After a first solo album of progressive folk, Draumkvedet(1984), she collaborated with saxophonist Jan Garbarek on Rosensfole (1989), a cross between medieval folk and New Age electronic music. She also records albums aimed at young people, featuring songs from her heritage in Tusseliten og Trippeliti (1996) and Sull (2014). Her discography also includes the albums Han rider den mørke natt and Soltreet, released in 2002. Mother of musicians Ingvill Marit Buen Garnås and Per Anders Buen Garnås, Agnes Buen Garnås died in Notodden on November 12, 2024, aged 78.
