Biography

Abwärts were a German punk band from Hamburg formed in 1979. The ensemble was founded by vocalist and guitarist Frank Ziegert, percussionist Frank-Martin Strauß, and bassist Joachim Osiek. Following the addition of drummer Axel Dill and vocalist and violinist Margita Haberland, they released their self-titled debut extended play, Abwärts (1980), which featured the track “Computerstaat” (1980). They achieved professional recognition for the studio album Amok Koma (1980), which they promoted with a tour as a support act for The Cure. Their recording career includes the single “Roboter in der Nacht / Für Mutti” (1981). After disbanding in 1984, Ziegert resumed activity with the group in 1987 and released the studio recording Ich seh die Schiffe den Fluss herunterfahren (1990). Their discography includes the studio albums Herzlich willkommen im Irrenhaus (1993) and Krautrock (2014). Ziegert died on 17 January 2024.
