Biography
Abner Jay was an American multi-instrumentalist from Georgia who was born as Abner Wingate Jay in 1921. He achieved professional recognition for performing as a one-man band and was famous for his eccentric, blues-infused folk music. Jay survived throat cancer in his twenties, which resulted in his distinctive bass vocal range. He began a musical career performing in medicine shows at age five and later joined the Rabbit Foot Minstrels and the Silas Green from New Orleans tent show. His discography includes the studio recordings Terrible Comedy Blues (1968), True Story of Dixie (1974), and Swaunee Water and Cocaine Blues (1976). Jay received wider attention in 1982 after being interviewed by Jas Obrecht for Guitar Player magazine. He died in 1993.
