5000 Volts were a British disco band and studio project formed in 1974, comprising musicians Tony Eyers and Martin Jay, along with singer Tina Charles. The group's origins trace back to the late 1960s when Martin Jay and Tina Charles were part of the band Northern Lights. After their initial collaboration, Tina Charles pursued a solo career while Tony Eyers continued as a composer and studio musician. In 1975, Tony Eyers wrote "Bye Love" and "Iâm on Fire", which were recorded with Martin Jay and Tina Charles. Initially released in Germany under the band moniker Airbus, the single was later reissued in the UK as 5000 Volts with the tracks swapped to feature "Iâm on Fire" as the A-side. The song reached number one in Germany, Sweden, and Belgium, and topped the charts in multiple European countries. In the US, it peaked at number 26. Following this success, the line-up was locked in with Kevin Wells on drums, Martin Cohen on bass, and Mike Nelson on keyboards. Their next single, "Look Out, I'm Coming", failed to replicate the earlier success, leading to Tina Charles' departure due to contractual issues. Linda Kelly replaced her as the lead vocalist for subsequent releases, including "Doctor Kiss-Kiss", which reached the Top 10 in the UK. Despite these efforts, the band struggled with further singles and albums, ultimately parting ways in 1977.
