Biography
Zara Nelsova, born Sarah Katznelson on December 23, 1918, in Winnipeg, Canada, was a cellist of Jewish-Russian descent. In 1932, she gave her first solo recital in London and appeared as soloist with sir Malcolm Regent. During World War II, Nelsova became the principal cellist of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and made her New York debut in 1942. Her international career included performances across Canada, the USSR, Australia, and Israel. Notable premieres include Samuel Barber's Concerto for Cello in Europe (1950) and Robert Casadesus' Sonata in America (1972). Nelsova taught at the Julliard School from 1962 until 2002. She passed away on October 10, 2002.
