Yu Matsuo (born October 15, 1990, Kyoto, Japan) is a Japanese pop pianist and singer-songwriter. She began playing the piano at age four and soon ventured into writing lyrics and composing music. At 20, she started performing live as a keyboardist, later expanding her work to include commercial songs and the production of company and school songs. In 2019, Zhang Youdai, a major figure in the Chinese music industry, discovered her talent through a video of her piano performance. Though relatively unknown at the time, her debut tour in China was a resounding success. Upon returning to Japan, a video of her playing a street piano at the Tokyo Metropolitan Government went viral, amassing over 1 million views on streaming video platforms and this newfound recognition shifted her focus back to her roots as a pianist. Known for her signature red high heels, Matsuo gained further acclaim in 2022 after director Amon Miyamoto invited her to audition before a panel of entertainment professionals, and she released original song âAlive!â, featured on the album ALIVE~Piano collection~ that same year, which solidified her success. Matsuo returned in 2024 with two albums: Love Songs, released in July, followed by ãã¢ãã¦ã¿ãã¡ in August, which featured popular movie tracks âPart of Your Worldâ and âMy Heart Will Go Onâ. ãã¢ãã¦ã¿ãã¡ reached number 68 on the Japanese album charts.
