Biography
Yondani Chak-Cheung Butt was a conductor born on January 13, 1945, in Macau. He studied music at Indiana University Bloomington and the University of Michigan, where he earned a PhD in chemistry. During his studies, he trained in conducting under Wolfgang Vacano and Josef Blatt. Butt founded the Symphonie Canadiana and led the ensemble on extensive tours throughout North America. In 1983, he became the resident conductor of the Victoria International Festival and established the Concerti Extravaganza series. Throughout his career, he conducted prestigious orchestras including the Philharmonia Orchestra and the London Symphony Orchestra. His discography features works by composers such as Mahler and Saint-Saëns. He received MRA Gramophone Awards in 1986 for âSymphony No. 3â by Rimsky-Korsakov and in 1995 for âSymphony No. 6â by Glazunov. His recording of Goldmarkâs Rustic Wedding Symphony was a Gramophone Criticsâ Choice. After retiring in the early 2000s, he resumed conducting in 2009. Butt died on August 28, 2014.
