Biography
The Yannis & the Yaw project was born of a 2016 meeting between the singer of the British rock band Yannis Philippakis and Nigerian drummer Tony Allen, a former Fela Kuti musician turned jazz figure. The sessions, held in Paris in 2017, feature French musicians Vincent Taeger (percussion, marimba), Vincent Taurelle (keyboards) and Ludovic Bruni (bass, guitar). This led to the album Lagos Paris London, an exercise in fusion between the math-rock of Foals, jazz and afrobeat, which was not released until 2024. Meanwhile, Tony Allen died in Paris on April 30, 2020 at the age of 79.
