Biography

Yafa Yarkoni was an Israeli singer who was born as Yafa Abramov in Givatayim, Palestine Mandate, in 1925. She achieved early professional recognition as a dancer with the troupe of Gertrud Kraus before beginning a singing career with the Haganah entertainment troupe “Ha-Hishtron” during the 1948 Palestine War. Yarkoni is famous for the hit single “Eynayim yeroukot” (“Green Eyes”) (1948), often considered the first Israeli pop song, and for the title “Songstress of the Wars” due to her frequent performances for soldiers. Her discography includes the studio recordings Bab al-Wad (1966), Shirim miKineret (1957), and Nirkoda im Yafa Yarkoni (1959). She won the Festival of Hebrew Song with the tracks “Ayelet Hakhen” (1965) and “Leil Stav” (1966) and received the Israel Prize in 1998. Yarkoni died in 2012.
