Biography
Formed in London, England in 1983, Working Week was a jazz pop group with indie rock roots going back several years. When iconic post-punk group Young Marble Giants split up, singer Alison Statton formed Weekend in 1981, who released one album before they, too, broke up. Weekend members Simon Booth (guitar) and Larry Stabbins (saxophone) formed Working Week. Their first single, âVenceremos (We Will Win)â (1984), featured guest vocals by Robert Wyatt and Tracey Thorn (Everything But the Girl). With the addition of full-time vocalist Juliet Roberts, the group released Working Nights, their debut album in 1985. The album reached Number 23 on the British Album chart. They released their second album Compañeros in 1986 followed a year later by Surrender. A compilation album, Payday (Best of Working Week), was issued in 1989, the same year the group returned with their fourth album Fire in the Mountain, which featured new vocalist Julie Tippets. The groupâs next album, Black and Gold (1991), featured vocalist Eyvon Waite. Working Week split up following the release of the album.
