Biography
Haywood Lee Mann (born December 30, 1952), known professionally as Woody Mann, was an American blues, jazz, and ragtime guitarist, educator, and historian from New York City. Mann studied acoustic guitar with Gary Davis from 1968 to 1972 and jazz improvisation with Lennie Tristano. He attended the Juilliard School and graduated from Empire State College in 1974. Between 1981 and 2000, Mann served as a faculty member at the New School. Mann performed at the World's Fair Expo in Lisbon and served as the U.S. Ambassador to the Great Britain International Guitar Festival. He founded International Guitar Seminars and worked as a consultant and historian for Yazoo Records and RCA Records. Mann authored the book The Blues Fakebook, and the CF Martin company issued a signature guitar in his honor. His discography included the albums Stories (1997), Heading Uptown (2000), and Originals (2012). Mann died in New York City on January 27, 2022, at age 69.
