Asleep at the Wheel, an American Western swing music group, was formed in Paw Paw, West Virginia, in 1970 by Ray Benson and Lucky Oceans. The band's early career included opening for Alice Cooper and Hot Tuna before moving to East Oakland, California, where they signed with United Artists Records. Their debut album, Comin' Right at Ya, was released in 1973. In 1974, the band moved to Austin, Texas, and released their self-titled second album featuring "Choo Choo Ch'Boogie", which hit the country charts. The following year saw the release of Texas Gold, including the top-10 single "The Letter That Johnny Walker Read". The band gained significant recognition with appearances on PBS's Austin City Limits. Throughout the 1980s, the band faced internal changes but achieved a comeback with albums like 10 (1987) and Western Standard Time (1988), both winning Grammy Awards for Best Country Instrumental. The 1990s brought further success with tributes to Bob Wills, including A Tribute to the Music of Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys (1993). Asleep at the Wheel has won over 8 Grammy Awards and charted over 21 singles on the Billboard country charts.
