Wayne Shorter was an American jazz saxophonist, composer and bandleader born on August 25, 1933 in Newark, New Jersey. He began playing clarinet at age 16 before switching to tenor saxophone. In 1959, Shorter joined Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, where he became the primary composer and musical director.
