Wayne Shorter was an American jazz saxophonist, composer and bandleader born on August 25, 1933 in Newark, New Jersey. He began playing clarinet at age 16 before switching to tenor saxophone. In 1959, Shorter joined Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, where he became the primary composer and musical director. His tenure with Miles Davis' Second Great Quintet from 1964 to 1970 was pivotal; during this period, he composed several jazz standards and played on seminal albums such as In a Silent Way and Bitches Brew, both in 1969. Shorter co-founded the fusion band Weather Report in 1970 with Joe Zawinul and Miroslav Vitous. He recorded over 20 albums as a bandleader, including Night Dreamer (1964), JuJu (1965), and Speak No Evil (1966). His work earned him 12 Grammy Awards and the Polar Music Prize in 2017. Shorter passed away on March 2, 2023.
