Biography
Walter Gerwig was a German lutenist and composer born in 1899. Gerwig played guitar within the Wandervogel movement before starting the lute in 1923. In 1928, Gerwig co-founded the Berliner Volksmusikschule and lectured at the Staatliche Akademie für Kirchen- und Schulmusik Berlin. During 1943, they were engaged by the Reichsrundfunk for a Baroque ensemble in St. Florian. After 1945, Gerwig toured Germany with the Lautencollegium and led the lute class at the Hochschule für Musik in Köln starting in 1952. Their recordings include Bach: Lute Music (1966) and The Baroque Lute (1969). Gerwig received the Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik in 1965 for the recording of Johann Sebastian Bach's âSuite g-mollâ (BWV 995). Gerwig died in 1966.
