Walter Julius Fried was an American violinist and conductor born on August 18, 1877, in San Francisco. He studied in Milwaukee and traveled to Moscow in 1907 for instruction with Mikhail Press. In 1908, Fried settled in Dallas, where he established a teaching studio. He founded the Beethoven Symphony Orchestra in 1910, which he renamed the Dallas Symphony Orchestra (DSO) in 1911. Fried served as the ensemble's concertmaster under music director Carl Venth until the orchestra disbanded in 1914. In 1915, he was appointed head of the violin department at Southern Methodist University. When the DSO resumed operations in 1918, Fried served as its music director for six seasons. His wife, Gladys Wallace Fried, performed as the orchestra's concertmaster during this period. Fried died in Colorado Springs on August 18, 1925.
