Wadsworth Mansion is an American rock band from Providence, Rhode Island. The group consisted of Steve Jablecki on guitar, keyboards, and vocals; Wayne Gagnon on guitar and vocals; Russ Sevigny on drums; Mike Jablecki on drums; and John Poole on bass guitar. They took their name from Wadsworth Mansion at Long Hill in Connecticut. In November 1970, the band released their first single, "Sweet Mary", backed by another non-album track, "What's On Tonight". This song became their only hit, peaking at number 7 on the US Billboard Hot 100 singles chart for the week ending February 27, 1971. In April 1971, they issued their first and only album, Wadsworth Mansion, which included the single "Sweet Mary" in a different version from the original release. The group released two more singles, "Michigan Harry Slaughter"/"Havin' Such A Good Time" in April 1971 and "Nine On The Line"/"Queenie Dew" in July 1971, but neither made it to Billboard's Hot 100 chart. In January 1972, Howie McDonald replaced Wayne Gagnon on guitar, and in May 1972, Charlie Flannery took over drumming duties from Mike Jablecki. The band recorded four new songs at CBS studios in New York City during this period. After their last tour of the south in August 1972, Wadsworth Mansion officially disbanded. McDonald and Steve Jablecki reformed the band in Hollywood in the summer of 1973 under a new name, Slingshot, at the producer's urging.
