Vijana Jazz Orchestra, also known as Vijana Jazz Band or simply Vijana Jazz, was a Tanzanian muziki wa dansi band founded in 1971 by John Ondoro Chacha. The band was sponsored by the youth wing of Tanzania's ruling party, Umoja wa Vijana. In 1978, a government law allowed bands to purchase foreign instruments, an opportunity that Vijana Jazz quickly seized. This led to their innovative sound incorporating synthesizers and drum machines, making them extremely popular in the 1980s. Notable styles created by Vijana Jazz include sindimba, heka heka, koka koka, watoto wa nyumbani, and pamba moto. Some of the most notable musicians who played in Vijana Jazz are Hamza Kalala, Hemedi Maneti, Issa Chikupele, and Manitu Musa. The band's popularity declined in the early 1990s following the sudden death of their leader John Ondoro Chacha in 1990.
