Biography
Vadim Vasilyevich Borisovsky, born on January 7, 1900 in Moscow, was a Russian violist from a wealthy family who founded the Smirnoff vodka company. Despite initial pressure to study medicine, Borisóvski pursued music secretly before enrolling at the Moscow Conservatory in 1918. He initially studied violin under Mikhail Press but switched to viola under Vladimir Bakaleinikov, graduating in 1922. In 1925, he took over Bakaleinikov's viola class at the conservatory. Borisóvski also played for the Beethoven Quartet, serving as its violist until 1964. He also played the viola d'amore, writing several transcriptions for it, and sharing his interest in the instrument with his students. Notable achievements include receiving the Stalin Prize in 1946 and being named a People's Artist of the RSFSR in 1965. Borisóvski passed away on August 2, 1972.
