Biography

The University of Wisconsin Marching Band, also known as the Badger Band, was formed in 1885 to support the university military battalion. Initially consisting of 11 members, it began performing at football games in 1885. Under director Raymond F. Dvorak from 1934, the band expanded and introduced new marching steps and formations. In 1969, Mike Leckrone became director, further expanding membership and popularizing the physically demanding "stop at the top" marching style. The band's repertoire includes traditional Wisconsin fight songs and other arrangements for field shows. Notable recordings include WiscWorld 1996 (1996). Leckrone retired in 2020 after 51 seasons and was succeeded by Corey Pompey. The band is known for its intense marching style and traditions such as the "Fifth Quarter," where it plays the home and visiting team’s fight songs along with popular tunes.
