Biography

The United States Marine Band, established on July 11, 1798, is the oldest professional musical organization in the United States and the premier band of the United States Marine Corps. Known as "The President's Own" since 1801, the band has performed at presidential events since the presidency of John Adams and every U.S. presidential inauguration since that of Thomas Jefferson in 1801. The band has released albums including The Music Lover's Grainger (2011) and Be Glad Then, America (2014), spanning classical music and patriotic tunes. Notable achievements include a consistent presence at presidential inaugurations, state funerals, and an annual fall concert tour since 1891 under the direction of John Philip Sousa. The band's members are selected through rigorous auditions and serve as active duty enlisted Marines.
