Biography
Emerging in 1990 during the acid jazz wave, the trio United Future Organization brought together the two Japanese DJs Tadashi Yabe and Toshio Matsuura, and their French counterpart of Moroccan origin Raphael Sebbag. After Jazzin' (1992), a compilation of early tracks, the debut album, released in 1993 on Bronswood Recordings and Gilles Peterson's Talkin' Loud, showcased the then-current blend of jazz, trip-hop and rap. Success was immediate, and UFO became one of the big names in the genre, as evidenced by their participation in the charity compilation Stolen Moments: Red Hot + Cool (1994), part of the series initiated by the Red Hot organization, for which the band's song gave the album its title. United Future Organization followed this up with the acclaimed albums No Sound Is Too Taboo (1994), 3rd Perspective (1996) and Bon Voyage (1999), followed by its electro counterpart Bon Voyage - Les Remixes (1999). After the release of V (2001) on the London-based Exceptional label, featuring contributions from Mark Murphy, Jeffery Smith, Valerie Etienne and Sabrina Malheiros, the departure of Toshio Matsuura in 2002 marked the end of the band's activities. On July 25, 2024, Tadashi Yabe died at the age of 59.
