Touch of Class is a Philly soul vocal group formed in 1975 in Philadelphia, originally made up of brothers Gerald and Pete Jackson, along with Herbert Brevard and Michael Hailstock (present until 1979). Born out of the city's rich musical tradition, they followed in the footsteps of the great harmonic soul bands of the 1970s, blending smooth vocals, lush orchestrations and meticulous production. The group made a name for themselves with their debut single "I'm in Heaven" (#65 on the R&B charts), produced by John Davis (of John Davis & the Monster Orchestra), a track that perfectly embodied the romantic, danceable soul of the time. They recorded their first album of the same name, I'm in Heaven, in 1976 on Midland International, a New York label affiliated to RCA, which also featured disco and soul artists. Although their career was relatively short-lived, with two further albums A Touch of Class (1979) and Love Means Everything (1981), their music remains emblematic of an era when Philadelphia Sound ruled the dancefloor, with its warm strings, smooth bass lines and tender vocals. Touch of Class remains a cult band for fans of refined soul and bittersweet grooves, typical of the Philly soul scene of the second half of the 1970s.
