Biography

Tonpei Left (born May 30, 1937 in Tokyo) is a Japanese actor and singer who was an artist of distinction, and while gaining popularity as a comedy relief artist in the 1970s, he released the single "Tonpei no Hey You Blues c/w Tokyo is a Nice Town" on November 21, 1973. Produced by Mickey Curtis, it was a hit as a soulful song incorporating popular words of the time. He continued to release works with his own unique melancholy and humor, such as "Tonpei no Sakebitari Jinsei" (Tonpei's Sakebitari Life). His musical activities would be reevaluated by the club scene and the hip-hop generation from the 1990s onward: "Tonpei no Hey You Blues," released in 1973, was sampled by Schadaraparr on their debut album (1990). Kenji Ohtsuki covered "Tonpei no Hey You Blues" on his first solo album "Only You" (1995).
