Biography

Tino Tracanna, born May 17, 1956, in Livorno, is an Italian jazz saxophonist and composer. Tracanna performs on soprano, alto, and tenor saxophone. Tracanna studied music in Bologna, where he completed a thesis on Steve Lacy. Between 1981 and the early 1990s, Tracanna performed in the ensemble of pianist Franco D'Andrea, recording the album Flavours. In 1984, Tracanna began a collaboration with trumpeter Paolo Fresu. Tracanna’s debut album, Mr. Frankenstein Blues, appeared in the late 1980s, followed by 292 (1990) featuring Massimo Colombo and Francesco Sotgiu. Tracanna's discography includes the albums Quartetto (1990), Gesualdo (1998), Nudes (1999), and La forma delle cose (2002). Tracanna recorded the album Punctus with Pierre Favre and performed with the Duke Ellington Repertory Orchestra and the Giorgio Gaslini big band. Tracanna also collaborated with vocalists Maria Pia De Vito and Tiziana Ghiglioni.
