Biography

Austrian violinist and conductor Thomas Zehetmair was born into a musical family in Salzburg on November 23, 1961. After beginning his apprenticeship at the age of five, he took lessons with his father at the Mozarteum, and later with Nathan Milstein and Max Rostal. Now an international soloist, he performs in concert and records for the Teldec, Philips, Berlin Classics, Avie, ECM and ECM New Series labels. His eclectic repertoire ranges from Bach, Vivaldi and Haydn through Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann and Brahms to Schönberg, Hölliger and Silvestrov. After conducting the Camerata Bern (1993), he founded the Zehetmair Quartett (1994), then took over the helm of the Northern Sinfonia (2002-2014), a British orchestra of which he was named Conductor Laureate in 2015. He successively conducts the Orchestre de chambre de Paris (2012-2014), the Musikkollegium Winterthur (2016) and the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra from 2019.
