Biography

Thomas Dyke Acland Tellefsen, born November 26, 1823, in Trondheim, Norway, was a Norwegian pianist, composer, and teacher. He studied under his father Johan Christian Tellefsen and Ole Andreas Lindeman before moving to Paris at age 19 to seek tutelage under Frédéric Chopin. Tellefsen also studied with Charlotte Thygeson, Friedrich Kalkbrenner, and Henri Reber. In 1851, he made his debut as a pianist at the Hôtel Lambert in Paris, gaining recognition for his interpretations of Chopin's music and his own compositions. Throughout the 1850s and 1860s, he toured extensively in England, Sweden, and Norway. His works included 44 opuses, comprising solo piano pieces, two piano concertos (Piano Concerto No. 1 and Piano Concerto No. 2), chamber music, and salon pieces. In 2024, a recording of his two piano concertos was released by Howard Shelley on the Hyperion label. Tellefsen died in Paris on October 6, 1874, and is buried at the Cimetière d'Auteuil.
