Thomas Duis, born in 1958, in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, is a pianist and educator, who trained with Kurt Gerecke, Karl-Heinz Kämmerling, and Fanny Waterman. Early in his career, Duis won the German Music Council Prize and scholarships to study with notable figures such as Claudio Abbado and Alfred Brendel. His breakthrough came with wins at the ARD Competition in 1987 and the second prize at the Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Master Competition in Tel Aviv. Duis performed worldwide as a "musical ambassador" for the Goethe-Institut, collaborating with musicians like Frank Peter Zimmermann and Gustav Rivinius. He was also notably recognized with the German Record Award. In 1994, Duis joined the Musikhochschule Graz as a professor, later moving to the Hochschule für Musik Saar in Saarbrücken in 1998, where he served as rector from April 2004 until 2012.
