Biography

Thomas Brandis, born on 23 June 1935, in Hamburg, Germany, was a notable violinist. He studied at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Hamburg under Eva Hauptmann and later with Max Rostal in London. After winning the International ARD Competition, he became concertmaster of the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra. In 1961, he joined the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra as first violinist, a role he held until 1983, performing under conductors like Herbert von Karajan and Karl Böhm. He also founded the Brandis Quartet in 1976, which performed at major festivals worldwide. He released recordings for labels including EMI and Deutsche Grammophon. As an educator, he taught violin at the University of the Arts Berlin until 2002 and later at the Musikhochschule Lübeck. Thomas Brandis passed away on 30 March 2017.
