Biography

Theodore Kuchar is an American and Ukrainian conductor and violist born on May 31, 1963, in New York City. He began playing the violin at age ten, later switching to the viola, and graduated from the Cleveland Institute of Music in 1982. Kuchar was principal violist with orchestras in Cleveland, Helsinki, and Cape Town. In 1987, he became music director of the Queensland Philharmonic Orchestra. From 1992 to 2000, Kuchar served as Principal Guest Conductor and Artistic Director of the National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine. Under his direction, the orchestra became a frequently recorded ensemble with over 60 discs released on Naxos. Recordings include Mussorgsky: Pictures at an Exhibition / Night on the Bare Mountain (2003) and Smetana: Má Vlast. Complete Orchestral Works (2007). Kuchar is Principal Conductor of the Lviv National Philharmonic Orchestra of Ukraine.
